Weekly Reading Story Information Dec. 5th-9th
This week in reading we will cover the book "Whose Garden Is It? This book is written by Mary Ann Hoberman and illustrated by Jane Dyer. Our students will cover the lives of various animals that live in a garden together. Unfortunately, there is only one problem among these neighboring animals. The problem is......... Who does the garden belong to? Students will listen to varying points of view from those living in the garden and decide who they think the rightful owner of the garden actually is. The students will have to describe and give reasons as to why they believe the rightful owner is of the garden!

Weekly Reading Story Information Nov. 28th -Dec. 2nd

This week we will be reading " A Bed for Winter" by Karen Wallace. In this story the children will hear and learn about a dormouse looking for a bed suitable for winter. She visits various other animal friends and tries their homes out to see if they would make a suitable home for the winter that is warm and protects her from the elements. She visits a meadow, hive, stump, cave, den, burrow, and finally a tree trunk that she decides is just perfect for her home. The students will compare and contrast various animal homes while helping her decide which home is best for her along her journey.

Weekly Reading Story Information Nov.14th-18th
This week we will read the story "Bear Snores On" by Karma Wilson. In this story, one by one, a whole host of different animals and birds find their way out of the cold and into Bear's cave to warm up. But even after the tea has been brewed and the corn has been popped, Bear just snores on! When he finally wakes up, he discovers he has made a whole lot of new friends, but he believes they have been having fun without him while he was too busy hibernating. Weekly Reading Story Information for November 7th- 11th
This week wwe will focus on the story "Animal Babies in Grasslands" by Jennifer Schofield. The students will be introduced to six different young animals and their mothers. We will learn about what life is like for the elephants, prairie dogs, zebras, kangaroos, giraffes, and lions that live in the grasslands.
Our Target Skill this week is identifying the Main Idea of a story, or, in other words, why it is written. We will be working to identify, form, and match the letter "Pp" to its sound--/p/.

Weekly Reading Story Information Oct. 31st-Nov. 5th
In this book, we will read about an armadillo who marks his home with an orange. One day a sudden wind blows this orange away and Armadillo is lost without his homemarker. He must then rely on his neighborhood animal friends to help him find his way back home. Our target skill this week is reviewing setting. We will be working together to identify, form (handwrite), and match the letter "Ss" to its sound---/p/.

Weekly Reading Story Information for Oct.17th-21st
This week we will be reading "Dig Dig Digging" by Margaret Mayo and Alex Ayliffe. This book will introduce us to a variety of construction equipment and the funny sounds they make along with the actions/jobs they preform . Our Target Skill this week will be classifying and categorizing. We will also continue to practice identifying the setting in a story, and identify the jobs that an author and illustrator preform to develop the books that we read. We will be working to identify, form (handwrite), and match the letter "Tt" to it's sound/t/.

Weekly Reading Story Information for Oct.24th-28th
This week we will be reading the story "Life in an Ocean" by Carol K. Lindeen. In this book, we will explore life in an ocean environment. We will also discuss the animals that call the ocean their home or habitat.Our Target Skill this week will be comparing and contrasting. We will be working to identify, form (handwrite), and match the letter "Aa" to its sound--/a/. We will spend two weeks on the letter "Aa" this year. We will also cover the reamining vowels of Ee, Ii, Oo, and Uu two weeks as well. We do this to instruct and inform the students of both the long and short vowel sounds that each letter covers.

Weekly Reading Story Information for Sept. 26th-30th
This week in reading we will read the story "Julius" wriiten by Angela Johnson and illustarted by Dav Pilkey. We will focus on the targeted skill of characters. We will begin to focus on one letter per week now with our reading series. This week's letter of the week is Mm. We will learn to identify it in print as well as produce it's phonics sound. Our class will spiral review such topics as setting, plot, rhyming, sequence, syllables, same beginning sounds, previewing and predicting. Letter of the week-Mm

Weekly Reading Story Information for Sept. 19th-23rd
This week in reading we will read the story "Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip". Our focus is on the letters and phonics of Tt, Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy, and Zz. We will review and practice the sight words of the and little. Our classroom targeted skill is classification and catergorizing. We will spiral review the skills of characters, setting, rhyming, and initial sounds. We will introduce our new vocabulary words this week of bakery, post office, fire station, library, park, and chaperone. Letters of the week: Tt, Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy, and Zz

Pizza Hut Spirit Night

One night each month our school will have a Pizza Hut night. On this night, 10% of the schools total sales will be donated back to Watt Hardsion by Pizza Hut. This is an easy way to earn extra money for the school while having a fun night out with the family. The date each month will be found on your child's weekly newsletter or monthly calendar. A Little About Mrs. Holmes
Dear Parents,Hello, My name is Alisa Jo Holmes. I am the daughter of Steve and Barbara White of Portland. I have lived in Portland all my life, and graduated here in the year 2000. I then went to Volunteer State Community College and received my Associates’ Degree in Elementary Education in 2002. Following that, I attended Tennessee State University and received my Bachelors Degree in 2004. After college, I married my husband Kelly Holmes in 2005. We now have a beautiful son together named Koleman. He is 3 years old and is the joy of my life.
I have taught kindergarten for eight wonderful years. All my teaching experience has been here at Watt Hardison Elementary. I look forward to making this year great with your child. If I can be of any assistance this year, please feel free to call me at 325-3233 between 2:00-3:30 p.m. and I will try to answer any questions you may have.

We will be reading the story "The Little School Bus" wriiten by Carol Roth and illustrated by Pamela Paparone in our class. Our targeted skill this week is characters.
